“Co-founders of Oceans Week Halifax, Alex and Mo discuss overcoming obstacles and the power of community.”
“I can’t help but wish that there aren’t more Robs in the world.”
If you ask Eric, the plastics campaign coordinator with Halifax’s Greenpeace Chapter, what inspires him about SHARKWATER Extinction, he won’t cite a moment in the movie, or even the movie itself. He’ll say it’s Rob himself.
2019 Oceans Week Press Release
K’jiputuk (Halifax, N.S.) — Oceans Week HFX unveiled its programming and event line-up for its 5th annual year. The 2019 celebration of Nova Scotia’s oceans community runs June 1 to 9, 2019 and is packed with events that participants have come to love, along with some exciting new offerings. This year, nearly 40 activities have been organized in collaboration with more than 50 local organizations, community leaders, academia, and businesses to engage citizens in educational and recreational activities related to the ocean, and how best to celebrate our connections to it.
“For so long, it’s just been Mo and I steering this ship, so thank you for being here.”
This is how our first volunteer orientation meeting started. There would be no volunteer gone un-thanked, un-hugged or at least un-high-fived on the watch of these co-founders. To kick off the session, they had everyone introduce themselves and identify why they were attending.
Community Planning Workshop
Hold up. Let’s back up here – that was far too formal. When you think about the ocean, do you think about anything formal or fancy? Nope, me neither. When I think of the ocean, the first image that comes to my mind is waves. Whether it be waves gently lapping the shore, or crashing against cliff face, there’s rarely anything “neatly-tied-in-a-bow” about the water that surrounds us. What it is though, is the coming together of forces – kind of like community planning.
